Service Description:

ZIP Code boundaries are based on carrier route boundaries, using a combine/dissolve approach. Because there are areas where carrier routes do not exist, ZIP Code boundaries have been extended to provide continuous coverage for the entire United States. In all cases where carrier routes exist, ZIP Codes share a border line with carrier routes.

In some areas, there is insufficient data to create ZIP Code polygons. Where possible, Precisely has created temporary ZIP Code areas and assigned these areas a ZIP Code starting with the three-digit ZIP prefix and a two-letter suffix of either MH or MX (e.g. 901MH). MX is used to indicate an area surrounded by land; MH indicates an area surrounded by water (the H comes from Hydrography).

In rare instances, ZIP Code boundaries may cross state borders. In these cases, the state recorded is the state used in mailing addresses within these ZIPs.

The following ZIP Code types are not included in ZIP Code Boundaries and Centroids:

• Military ZIPs

• Department of Homeland Security (DHS) ZIPs

• US Territory ZIPs (except for Puerto Rico)

• Parcel Return Service ZIPs
